Martin Luther King talked about the problems in his neighborhood, but his dream was a dream for everyone. He made civil rights a matter of human rights.<\/p>\n<p>King, <a title=\"Which leader said he would achieve his goal &quot;by any means necessary&quot;? (Today's Question, Spotlight Online)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spotlight-online.de\/node\/6029\/results\" target=\"_blank\">Malcolm X<\/a> and other leaders did not live to see their work carried on by <b>Gil Scott-Heron<\/b>, a spoken-word poet who could be considered the inventor of rap.<\/p>\n<p>In 1970, while most of the nation was still celebrating the first moon landings, Scott-Heron said these were an escapist <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a8c2af\">distraction<\/span> from real problems here on the ground.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"425\" height=\"349\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.liveleak.com\/e\/912_1253757259\" \/><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.liveleak.com\/e\/912_1253757259\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" wmode=\"transparent\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" height=\"370\" width=\"450\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;A rat done bit my sister, Nell, with <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a8c686\">Whitey<\/span> on the moon,&#8221; he complained over the sound of bongo drums. &#8220;Her legs and arms began to swell, and Whitey&#8217;s on the moon. &#8230;<br \/>\nThe Man just <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a8ca71\">upped<\/span> my rent last night, &#8217;cause Whitey&#8217;s on the moon. No hot water, no toilets, no lights, but Whitey&#8217;s on the moon. &#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The influence of dialect (&#8220;done bit&#8221; as the present perfect, and various <a title=\"How not to speak English (Mike Pilewski for the Spotlight team)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spotlight-online.de\/blogs\/the-spotlight-team\/how-not-to-speak-english\" target=\"_blank\">double negatives<\/a>), along with the perfect <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a8ce55\">delivery<\/span>, made the message strong and believable. A <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a8d23d\">chastised<\/span> nation <a title=\"Advice from Buzz, the Rocket Man\" href=\"http:\/\/fascinating-america.com\/blog\/advice-from-buzz-the-rocket-man\/\">canceled the last three <i>Apollo<\/i> missions<\/a> and spent the money on social programs instead.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whitey&#8221; wasn&#8217;t Scott-Heron&#8217;s only target, though. On the same album, he <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a8da0d\">railed against<\/span> the laziness of many African-Americans who themselves sought escapism in drugs and television. He <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a8ddf5\">implored<\/span> them to get up and do something about their situation.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/embed\/video\/x28ijn\" width=\"425\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;You will not be able to stay home, brother! You will not be able to <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a8e1dd\">plug in<\/span>, <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a8e5c5\">turn on<\/span> and <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a8e9ae\">cop out<\/span>! You will not be able to lose yourself on <a title=\"Heroin (Wikipedia)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heroin\" target=\"_blank\"><span id=\"tooltip5521a70a8ed97\">skag<\/span><\/a> and <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a8f17e\">skip out for<\/span> beer during <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a8f56b\">commercials<\/span>, because the revolution will not <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a8f950\">be televised<\/span>. &#8230;<br \/>\nThe revolution will not be right back after a message about a <a title=\"Ajax (cleaning product) (Wikipedia)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ajax_%28cleaning_product%29\" target=\"_blank\"><span id=\"tooltip5521a70a8fd35\">white tornado<\/span><\/a>, <a title=\"Moonshine (Wikipedia)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moonshine\" target=\"_blank\"><span id=\"tooltip5521a70a9011f\">white lightning<\/span><\/a> or white people! You will not have to worry about a <a title=\"Dove (toiletries) (Wikipedia)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dove_%28toiletries%29\" target=\"_blank\"><span id=\"tooltip5521a70a9050a\">dove<\/span><\/a> in your bedroom, the <a title=\"Our history (ExxonMobil)\" href=\"http:\/\/corporate.exxonmobil.com\/en\/company\/about-us\/history\/overview\" target=\"_blank\"><span id=\"tooltip5521a70a908ef\">tiger in your tank<\/span><\/a> or <a title=\"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (Wikipedia)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Revolution_Will_Not_Be_Televised\" target=\"_blank\">the giant<\/a> in your toilet bowl! &#8230;<br \/>\nThe revolution won&#8217;t be no <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a90ce9\">rerun<\/span>, brothers. The revolution will be live.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a title=\"When language is a weapon (Mike Pilewski)\" href=\"\/blog\/when-language-is-a-weapon\" target=\"_blank\">Language is a weapon.<\/a> Scott-Heron <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a914ae\">carved up<\/span> his targets with a polished <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a91891\">sword<\/span> of <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a91c79\">righteousness<\/span>, his clever <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a9205e\">puns<\/span> <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a92449\">lingering<\/span> like the mark of Zorro. He got so <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a92831\">worked up<\/span> about Ronald Reagan&#8217;s election in 1980 that he needed a 12-minute song to explain it. America was confused, he said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/56ipWM3DWe4\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;They don&#8217;t know if they want to be Bob Dylan or <a title=\"Matt Dillon (Gunsmoke) (Wikipedia)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Matt_Dillon_%28Gunsmoke%29\" target=\"_blank\"><span id=\"tooltip5521a70a92c16\">Matt Dillon<\/span><\/a>. They don&#8217;t know if they want to be diplomats or continue to threaten everyone with a nuclear nightmare. <a title=\"John Foster Dulles (Wikipedia)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Foster_Dulles\" target=\"_blank\"><span id=\"tooltip5521a70a93007\">John Foster Dulles<\/span><\/a> ain&#8217;t nothing but the name of an airport now.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Like all revolutionaries, however, Scott-Heron had a limited <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a933e4\">shelf life<\/span>. Although some of his songs, like <a title=\"&quot;The Bottle&quot; (YouTube)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_b2F-XX0Ol0\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Bottle&#8221;<\/a>, warned against the <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a937cc\">prevalence<\/span> and danger of alcohol and drug <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a93bb8\">abuse<\/span>, he himself wasn&#8217;t able to keep away from that dark path. A diagnosis of HIV added to his many problems.<\/p>\n<p>Scott-Heron died last week at the age of 62, but his words \u2014 and the people they&#8217;ve inspired \u2014 <span id=\"tooltip5521a70a93f9f\">live on<\/span>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every revolution needs a poet.
