The decorations are already up on the neighbors&#8217; houses: <a title=\"Jack o'lantern (Wikipedia)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jack_o%27lantern\" target=\"_blank\">jack o&#8217; lanterns<\/a>, dried <span id=\"tooltip551fcba67fcc5\">cornstalks<\/span> and <span id=\"tooltip551fcba6800aa\">scarecrows<\/span> are scaring away evil spirits five and a half weeks before October 31.<\/p>\n<p>The Halloween colors, orange and black, have also appeared a lot downtown. They&#8217;re used on signs that announce road <span id=\"tooltip551fcba680493\">construction<\/span>, <span id=\"tooltip551fcba68087d\">detours<\/span> and <span id=\"tooltip551fcba680c62\">inconveniences<\/span> of all kinds. And Pittsburgh is preparing for some <span id=\"tooltip551fcba6810a2\">major<\/span> inconveniences.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday and Friday, the leaders of 19 countries and the European Union \u2014 among them Barack Obama and both main candidates for the German chancellorship \u2014 are meeting here for the economic <span id=\"tooltip551fcba68147e\">summit<\/span> of the Group of Twenty (<a title=\"What is the G-20? (g20.org)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.g20.org\/about_what_is_g20.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">G-20<\/a>) Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors.<\/p>\n<p>Although Pittsburgh has many things to be proud of, its infrastructure is not one of them. The city cannot handle traffic even on a normal day. The small, <span id=\"tooltip551fcba681821\">triangular<\/span> downtown area is surrounded by rivers and mountains, and the narrow streets are <span id=\"tooltip551fcba681cd5\">perpetually<\/span> <span id=\"tooltip551fcba681feb\">under repair<\/span>. Photo: Mike Pilewski<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;With only three months to prepare, the city has done well,&#8221; Mayor Luke Ravenstahl told the TV cameras on Tuesday, without seeming convinced of his own words. Security has been thought out, but important roads and buildings are under repair, and without enough hotel rooms, some G-20 delegates <span id=\"tooltip551fcba682bb5\">are said to<\/span> be spending the night in other Pennsylvania towns.<\/p>\n<p>Ravenstahl and local business leaders feel that <span id=\"tooltip551fcba682f90\">hosting<\/span> the summit will attract investment and tourists. However, the <i>Pittsburgh Tribune-Review<\/i>, which <span id=\"tooltip551fcba683379\">objects to<\/span> anything the Democratic mayor, Democratic governor and Democratic president do, <a title=\"Attack of the G-20 Delusions (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)\" href=\"http:\/\/triblive.com\/x\/pittsburghtrib\/opinion\/columnists\/mcnickle\/s_641668.html#axzz3WL7j0cvI\" target=\"_blank\">would prefer not<\/a> to see the thousands of G-20 protesters, which it considers to be an organized army coming to <span id=\"tooltip551fcba683a76\">do combat<\/span>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1024\" style=\"width: 685px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fascinating-america.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/pilewski-09pit254.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1024\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1024\" src=\"http:\/\/fascinating-america.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/pilewski-09pit254.jpg\" alt=\"Pittsburgh welcomes the world. Photo: Mike Pilewski.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Pittsburgh is experiencing &#8220;a police presence like the city has never seen,&#8221; in the words of one TV news reporter. The county is even <a title=\"Onorato: 'Absurd' Reports About Mass Release Of ACJ Inmates (WTAE-TV)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thepittsburghchannel.com\/g20\/20976661\/detail.html\" target=\"_blank\">letting <\/a> 100-200 <span id=\"tooltip551fcba683f31\">inmates<\/span> out of the local prison to make room for new arrests that haven&#8217;t happened yet. Lisa Fithian of United for Peace and Justice, a group opposed to the Iraq war, told KDKA-TV it was &#8220;<span id=\"tooltip551fcba684513\">martial law<\/span> happening right in front of everybody&#8217;s eyes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Most of the protesters belong to minor groups representing <span id=\"tooltip551fcba684714\">causes<\/span> such as AIDS awareness and women&#8217;s rights, which have little to do with the economic work of the G-20. <a title=\"The G-6 Billion\" href=\"http:\/\/www.g6billion.org\" target=\"_blank\">The G-6 Billion<\/a> aims to call attention to what it calls the &#8220;broken promises&#8221; of G-20 nations. <a title=\"The G-20 Resistance Project\" href=\"http:\/\/resistg20.org\" target=\"_blank\">The G-20 Resistance Project<\/a> aims more directly to <span id=\"tooltip551fcba684ed8\">point out<\/span> what they call the undemocratic nature of the G-20&#8217;s <span id=\"tooltip551fcba6852b8\">closed<\/span> meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Will the protesters get the media attention they seek? And will nonviolent organizers be able to control individuals who may seek violence?<\/p>\n<p>When children go door to door on Halloween, they ask &#8220;<span id=\"tooltip551fcba6856a1\">Trick<\/span> or <span id=\"tooltip551fcba685a89\">treat<\/span>?&#8221; These days, they always get a treat \u2014 candy. But two or three generations ago, they could play a trick on you \u2014 usually vandalism of some sort. Back then, the kids were all from your neighborhood. Now, like the protesters, they can come from <span id=\"tooltip551fcba685e70\">all over<\/span>. Let&#8217;s hope that during the G-20 there&#8217;ll be no tricks and enough treats <span id=\"tooltip551fcba686259\">to go around<\/span>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Halloween has come early to Pittsburgh this year.
