{"id":57,"date":"2014-08-21T21:29:04","date_gmt":"2014-08-21T20:29:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fascinating-america.com\/blog\/?p=57"},"modified":"2015-04-27T21:04:40","modified_gmt":"2015-04-27T19:04:40","slug":"dont-shoot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/fascinating-america.com\/blog\/dont-shoot\/","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t shoot!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The recent events in Ferguson, Missouri, have played out in a way that only Quentin Tarantino could have imagined. <\/p>\n<p>Tarantino&#8217;s films, which are very violent, often tell their story from more than one perspective. Scenes are not shown in the usual order. Key information is presented after the fact, <span id=\"tooltip5517d616533aa\">reversing<\/span> whatever conclusions one may have drawn up to that point. It&#8217;s not possible to fully understand what&#8217;s happened until the final scene.<\/p>\n<p>Ferguson is, sadly, real life, but if it were a movie, it would probably be in its second hour right now. Here&#8217;s what is believed to have happened, in roughly the order in which it became known.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 On August 9, policeman <b>Darren Wilson<\/b> told an 18-year-old man not to walk in the street. The young man walked toward him. Wilson, from inside his car, shot him at least six times.<br \/>\u2022 The young man, <b>Michael Brown<\/b>, was <span id=\"tooltip5517d61653796\">unarmed<\/span>.<br \/>\u2022 The policeman, like nearly all of the police in Ferguson, is white. The young man, like two-thirds of the community where he lives, was black.<br \/>\u2022 Wilson said Brown had tried to <span id=\"tooltip5517d61653b78\">reach for<\/span> his (Wilson&#8217;s) weapon.<br \/>\u2022 The main <span id=\"tooltip5517d61653f61\">witness<\/span> to the shooting says Brown had put his hands up and said, &#8220;Don&#8217;t shoot.&#8221;<br \/>\u2022 The main witness to the shooting is a friend of the victim.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Citizens have <span id=\"tooltip5517d61654349\">staged<\/span> nightly protests against the will of the police, often <span id=\"tooltip5517d61654736\">chanting<\/span>, &#8220;Hands up! Don&#8217;t shoot!&#8221;<br \/>\u2022 Some <span id=\"tooltip5517d61654b1e\">looting<\/span> has occurred. Some local people have also protected businesses from being looted.<br \/>\u2022 As in other US cities, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/how-americas-police-became-army-1033-program-264537\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"How America's Police Became an Army: The 1033 Program (Newsweek)\">the police are &#8220;militarized&#8221;<\/a>, using vehicles and equipment given to them <span id=\"tooltip5517d61654f04\">for free<\/span> by the <span id=\"tooltip5517d616552ed\">Defense Department<\/span>. <br \/>\u2022 Police have shot tear gas at journalists, have arrested several and have <span id=\"tooltip5517d616556d6\">beaten up<\/span> at least a few of them.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jqqp_LAVklA\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"236\" width=\"420\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Mean guy or nice kid?<\/h2>\n<p>\u2022 The media showed a photo of Brown in which he looked <span id=\"tooltip5517d61655abe\">thuggish<\/span>.<br \/>\u2022 Brown&#8217;s family showed a photo in which he looked like a nice kid.<br \/>\u2022 Just before the <span id=\"tooltip5517d61655ea6\">incident<\/span>, Brown and his friend had left a <span id=\"tooltip5517d6165628e\">convenience store<\/span>, where Brown had <span id=\"tooltip5517d61656675\">allegedly<\/span> <span id=\"tooltip5517d61656a5e\">shoplifted<\/span> a box of cigars. <span id=\"tooltip5517d61656e45\">Footage<\/span> from a store camera shows that Brown has a huge <span id=\"tooltip5517d6165722c\">physique<\/span>. He is seen pushing someone aside as he leaves the store.<br \/>\u2022 Additional footage shows that Brown probably paid for the cigars and may have been pushed first.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2726727\/Ferguson-police-mistakenly-arrested-innocent-man-viciously-beating-charging-bleeding-THEIR-uniforms.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Ferguson police 'mistakenly arrested an innocent man before viciously beating him so bad he was taken to hospital and then charged for bleeding on THEIR uniforms' (Daily Mail)\">In 2009<\/a>, in a case of <span id=\"tooltip5517d61657615\">mistaken identity<\/span>, four Ferguson police officers arrested a black man, <b>Henry Davis<\/b>, beat him up, then <span id=\"tooltip5517d61657a05\">fined<\/span> him $3,000 for bleeding on their uniforms.<br \/>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/news\/local\/crime-and-courts\/new-lawsuit-alleges-ferguson-officers-used-taser-on-mentally-ill\/article_878b8f4f-3ee5-5c7a-bfd2-232006afe9bc.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"New lawsuit alleges Ferguson officers used Taser on mentally ill man in 2011, killing him (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)\">In 2011<\/a>, Ferguson police used a <span id=\"tooltip5517d61657de5\">Taser<\/span> three times on a mentally ill man, killing him.<br \/>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/08\/20\/ray-albers-ferguson-protesters_n_5696715.html?utm_hp_ref=mostpopular\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"CONFIRMED: Cop Who Threatened Ferguson Protesters Is Lt. Ray Albers (Huffington Post)\">Tuesday night<\/a>, police officer <b>Ray Albers<\/b> pointed his semi-automatic weapon at protesters and threatened to kill them if they did not step back. He was immediately <span id=\"tooltip5517d616581cc\">suspended<\/span> from duty.<br \/>\u2022 In nearby St. Louis, a (black) shoplifter, <b>Kajieme Powell<\/b>, was shot nine times on Tuesday afternoon after <span id=\"tooltip5517d616585b5\">taunting<\/span> police while carrying a knife. Some of the 150 protesters who gathered at the scene shouted, &#8220;Hands up! Shoot back!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Some protesters admit to having traveled to Ferguson from other places, such as Chicago.<br \/>\u2022 Police say that among the protesters are individuals carrying loaded guns.<br \/>\u2022 After a <span id=\"tooltip5517d6165899d\">curfew<\/span> was unsuccessful, the governor of Missouri called in troops from the National Guard.<\/p>\n<h2>Several dimensions<\/h2>\n<p>As you can see, there are several dimensions to this; they&#8217;re being interpreted along the <span id=\"tooltip5517d61658d85\">fault lines<\/span> of race, respect for authority or <span id=\"tooltip5517d6165916d\">lack<\/span> <span id=\"tooltip5517d61659555\">thereof<\/span>, militarization of the police, the correct or excessive use of force, interpretations of available evidence and the handling of such evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Comparisons have been drawn to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rodney_King\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Rodney King (Wikipedia)\">Rodney King<\/a>  incident of 1991, but also to other incidents this year in which unarmed black teenagers were killed by white policemen. In New York, <b>Eric Garner<\/b> was <span id=\"tooltip5517d6165993c\">choked<\/span> to death; his crime had been selling cigarettes on the <span id=\"tooltip5517d61659d25\">sidewalk<\/span>. In Los Angeles, <b>Ezell Ford<\/b> was shot after being <span id=\"tooltip5517d6165a10c\">pulled over<\/span> in traffic.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor of Ferguson has promised to <span id=\"tooltip5517d6165a4f5\">recruit<\/span> black police officers, but that will take time. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/president-barack-obama-please-enact-new-federal-laws-to-protect-citizens-from-police-violence-and-misconduct\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Please Enact New Federal Laws to Protect Citizens from Police Violence and Misconduct (Change.org)\">Petitions are circulating<\/a>  to require police officers to wear cameras in order to <span id=\"tooltip5517d6165a8dd\">capture<\/span> all such incidents on video. Civil-rights activist <b>Jesse Jackson<\/b> has told the citizens of Ferguson to take control of the <span id=\"tooltip5517d6165acc5\">matter<\/span> in the next election. <\/p>\n<p>The <span id=\"tooltip5517d6165b0ac\">Justice Department<\/span> has begun an investigation into the Michael Brown shooting; <span id=\"tooltip5517d6165b494\">Attorney General<\/span> <b>Eric Holder<\/b> was in Ferguson yesterday to hear as many sides of the story as possible. However, the federal <span id=\"tooltip5517d6165b87d\">grand jury<\/span> is not expected to have all the evidence until mid-October, and it could be months after that before a <span id=\"tooltip5517d6165bc65\">verdict is handed down<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-nation\/wp\/2014\/08\/18\/police-in-ferguson-arrest-and-threaten-more-journalists\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Police in Ferguson arrest and threaten more journalists (Washington Post)\">The way journalists are being arrested, attacked, threatened and lied to<\/a>  as they try to <span id=\"tooltip5517d6165c04d\">cover<\/span> the story makes it hard to <span id=\"tooltip5517d6165c435\">side<\/span> with the police on this one. With new facts coming out daily, however, we&#8217;ll have to wait till the end to know what really happened.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Update, August 26:<\/b> Hundreds of people <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-28924099\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Michael Brown funeral: St Louis mourns Ferguson teenager (BBC)\">attended<\/a> Brown&#8217;s <span id=\"tooltip5517d61675a76\">funeral<\/span> on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Both sides are recognizing that the courts will have the final say over what happened. Supporters of police officer Darren Wilson <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ferguson-shooting-nearly-400k-raised-online-for-officer-darren-wilson-who-fatally-shot-michael-brown\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Nearly $400,000 raised online for Ferguson cop who fatally shot teen (CBS)\">have raised nearly $400,000<\/a> for possible legal fees and the cost of him and his family to move to another city. Supporters of Michael Brown, the young man who was shot, have raised $250,000. Wilson remains suspended but on full pay.<\/p>\n<p>Are racial stereotypes at work in Ferguson? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/08\/25\/343143937\/in-ferguson-court-fines-and-fees-fuel-anger\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"In Ferguson, Court Fines And Fees Fuel Anger (NPR)\">NPR reports:<\/a> &#8220;Data from the Missouri state attorney general&#8217;s office show that black drivers are stopped in Ferguson in disproportionate numbers, even though Ferguson police are more likely to find contraband when they stop white drivers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><i>The Huffington Post<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/08\/24\/justin-cosma-ferguson-police_n_5705409.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Ferguson Police Officer Justin Cosma Hog-Tied And Injured A Young Child, Lawsuit Alleges (Huffington Post)\">has identified<\/a> the police officer, <b>Justin Cosma<\/b>, who mistreated journalists from <i>The Huffington Post<\/i> and <i>The Washington Post<\/i>. Cosma and another officer, <b>Richard Carter<\/b>, are in the middle of a <span id=\"tooltip5517d61675e5c\">lawsuit<\/span> for alleged violence against an unarmed 12-year-old boy in 2012. Similar allegations concern officer <b>Eddie Boyd III<\/b>, who left his police job in St. Louis, only to be hired in nearby Ferguson. <\/p>\n<p>By contrast, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/08\/25\/moose-office-building-germany_n_5711143.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Moose Strolls Through Office Building (Huffington Post)\">in Dresden, Germany,<\/a> on Monday, police tried for six hours to convince a <span id=\"tooltip5517d61676245\">moose<\/span> to leave an office building before using a tranquilizer gun.
