Hugh Young had a great sense of humor and a remarkable way of relating to young people. Young told us he&#8217;d do anything to help us students stay awake during his physics lectures. &#8220;I&#8217;d stand on my head for you guys if I could,&#8221; he insisted.<\/p>\n<p>A bad teacher can really waste your time or kill any interest you might have in a <span id=\"tooltip5517d69705a90\">subject<\/span>, but a good teacher is a guide for life. <a href=\"\/blog\/what-my-teachers-really-taught-me\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"What my teachers really taught me (Mike Pilewski)\">Like my schoolteachers<\/a>, some of my college professors said a lot <span id=\"tooltip5517d69705f3b\">between the lines<\/span> that has stayed with me. Here are some of their <span id=\"tooltip5517d69706359\">gems<\/span> to start this academic year.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-top: 2em;\">ON THEIR AREA OF EXPERTISE<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;[The earth] is like one of those <span id=\"tooltip5517d69706d4f\">candies<\/span> that have a soft center &#8230; but it also has this, like a cashew, in the middle, or like a peppercorn. So you&#8217;re <span id=\"tooltip5517d697071a2\">chewing along<\/span> and all of a sudden you break your <span id=\"tooltip5517d6970759f\">jaw<\/span> on this hard thing. That&#8217;s pretty bad. So stay out of the center of the earth. It&#8217;s a bad place.&#8221;<br \/>\u2014 Raymond E. White, astronomy professor<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The lesson? If you make a <span id=\"tooltip5517d69707613\">vivid<\/span> analogy, people will always remember it.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;If Nietzsche isn&#8217;t roasting in the hottest part of hell, he&#8217;s probably laughing at us.&#8221;<br \/>\u2014 Richard C. Helt, German professor<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Translation: philosophers can write whatever they want, but who knows if they&#8217;re right?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Can you imagine? All of our psychological data now depend on people who have been programmed by MTV!&#8221;<br \/>\u2014 Mylan Engel, philosophy <span id=\"tooltip5517d69707ea6\">TA<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Don&#8217;t worry. People in academic circles know what they&#8217;re dealing with.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-top: 2em;\">ON PROBLEM-SOLVING<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Problem 9 is not a hard problem, but if you work at it long enough, you can make it very <span id=\"tooltip5517d697081a1\">involved<\/span>.&#8221;<br \/>\u2014 Hugh D. Young, physics professor<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span id=\"tooltip5517d69708596\">Overthinking<\/span> things can make life difficult. Half of the class got this problem wrong because they couldn&#8217;t believe it was as simple as it appeared. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;I mean, this is the sort of thing computers like to do.&#8221;<br \/>\u2014 Roy Emrick, physics professor<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Some tasks, such as <span id=\"tooltip5517d6970896a\">repetitive<\/span> statistical calculations, are better delegated.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;If you throw that out, you&#8217;re throwing out the baby and the bathwater and the <span id=\"tooltip5517d69708d88\">tub<\/span> and the soap and the window, and you&#8217;ll have to start all over with a new <span id=\"tooltip5517d6970913c\">pregnancy<\/span> \u2014 just to extend the analogy.&#8221;<br \/>\u2014 Raymond E. White<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Be careful what you <span id=\"tooltip5517d69709556\">assume<\/span>. Something that a student assumed to be unimportant <span id=\"tooltip5517d69709907\">turned out<\/span> to be very important after all.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-top: 2em;\">ON LIFE<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The wise person never throws anything away.&#8221;<br \/>\u2014 Roy Emrick<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/the-dog-ate-my-homework\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"The dog ate my homework (Mike Pilewski)\">Always have a backup.<\/a> Things get lost, like the little book in which Dr. Emrick had recorded our homework grades.<\/p>\n<p>Some of my professors&#8217; statements stood on their own.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Being ignorant is nothing to be ashamed of as long as you do something about it.&#8221;<br \/>\u2014 Hugh D. Young<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;If you live only on rational principles, you may <span id=\"tooltip5517d69709f32\">violate<\/span> <span id=\"tooltip5517d6970a0da\">common sense<\/span>.&#8221;<br \/>\u2014 Roland Richter, German professor<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Technique is everything. In romance and in mathematics, technique is everything.&#8221;<br \/>\u2014 Raymond E.
