Will.i.am&#8217;s &#8220;Yes, We Can&#8221; video, along with Barelypolitical&#8217;s Obama Girl series, started an <span id=\"tooltip551f6a3231c47\">avalanche<\/span> of user-made songs and parodies about all the candidates that kept us entertained for a year. There were almost too many songs to mention.<\/p>\n<p>The year 2012 has been very different. YouTube users failed to get excited enough about the candidates to go out and write songs about them. The campaigns were unexciting and uneventful, so that was no surprise.<\/p>\n<p>About a month ago, however, that suddenly changed \u2014 and now I&#8217;m proud to present my own Oscars, if you will, for political songs in four categories, judged on <span id=\"tooltip551f6a3232030\">technical merit<\/span>, humor, clever <span id=\"tooltip551f6a3232418\">lyrics<\/span>, <span id=\"tooltip551f6a3232800\">overall catchiness<\/span>, and skillful dance moves. Click on &#8220;Direct link&#8221; to watch each one on YouTube \u2014 where you&#8217;ll usually find the lyrics as well.<\/p>\n<p>Our first category is&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color:firebrick;\">Best original songs<\/h2>\n<p><b>The Kaufer Clan<\/b>\u2019s <b>&#8220;The Obama Smackdown&#8221;<\/b> lends a funky sound to the kind of superhero imagery we saw in the 2008 campaign.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/tffuSjFtoPw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tffuSjFtoPw\" target=\"_blank\">Direct link<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The most common musical genre among this year&#8217;s election videos is rap. <b>Lukerative<\/b>\u2019s <b>&#8220;Mitt Romney Music Video&#8221;<\/b> <span id=\"tooltip551f6a32333b6\">excels<\/span> with lyrical skills and a strong bassline.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/KTjkcbd2UQ0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KTjkcbd2UQ0\" target=\"_blank\">Direct link<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Illy Ill<\/b> lends some <b>&#8220;Presidential Swagger&#8221;<\/b> to the campaign in this soulful rap:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/v3FPiQh1sPg\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v3FPiQh1sPg\" target=\"_blank\">Direct link<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Bruce Bellott<\/b>&#8216;s country song is more anti-Obama than pro-Romney, but gives a voice to the &#8220;tea party&#8221; movement. The title is <b>&#8220;Mitt Romney to Obama: You&#8217;re Fired!&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/elUqEF_YTsM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=elUqEF_YTsM\" target=\"_blank\">Direct link<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The minor-party candidates were not invited to the debates, but their supporters \u2014 who may be as many as six percent of voters \u2014 are present on YouTube. <b>Jvince<\/b> <span id=\"tooltip551f6a3233b88\">makes the case for<\/span> Libertarian Gary Johnson in this content-heavy rap:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/8scZJVhjDGo\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8scZJVhjDGo\" target=\"_blank\">Direct link<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There don&#8217;t appear to be any well-made videos for Green Party candidate Jill Stein, but <b>Dr. Revolution<\/b> hopes to generate support for all minor parties. The Swiss government was <span id=\"tooltip551f9d541b872\">apparently<\/span> also not amused. The video can still be found, but it is no longer officially available.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color:firebrick;\">Best real debates<\/h2>\n<p><b>The Gregory Brothers<\/b> of <a title=\"Auto-Tune the News! (Mike Pilewski)\" href=\"\/blog\/auto-tune-the-news\" target=\"_blank\">Auto-Tune the News<\/a> are back, and they&#8217;ve made songs out of all four of the October debates. Psy says the motto of &#8220;Gangnam Style&#8221; is &#8220;Dress <span id=\"tooltip551f9df03265b\">classy<\/span>, dance cheesy&#8221;; in our top video, <b>&#8220;Obama Style&#8221;<\/b>, <b>Smooth-E<\/b>,<b> Alphacat<\/b> and their friends do a <span id=\"tooltip551f9df032e28\">stellar<\/span> job of both.
