That Barack Obama! You never know what he’s going to do next. One night, he’s cracking<\/span> jokes at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner<\/a>. The next night, he tells us Osama bin Laden is dead.<\/p>\n

I have to offer my congratulations. Obama had promised to go after<\/span> bin Laden, and he got him. I’m happy to see that the president can put his money where his mouth is<\/span>. But I’m still bothered<\/span> by a few things. You see, the White House can’t get its story straight<\/span>. If this were a police investigation<\/span>, we’d even suspect<\/span> that it’s hiding something.<\/p>\n

What really happened?<\/h2>\n

Each day, we’ve heard a different answer to each of these questions: Did the US violate<\/span> Pakistani sovereignty<\/b> \u2014 and international law \u2014 to get bin Laden? Did the commandos<\/span> try to take him alive<\/b> or just gun him down<\/span>? Were bin Laden’s people even armed<\/span>? And why haven’t we seen any photos of Osama<\/b>, the dead terrorist?<\/p>\n

The 9\/11 story<\/a> is ending with the same confusion with which it began. The conspiracy<\/span> theorists are already coming out of the woodwork<\/span>.<\/p>\n

I’m inclined<\/span> to believe the official story, but so many things we were told about the “global war on terror” were flat-out<\/span> lies. The Taliban refused to hand over bin Laden: not true. Bin Laden was actually running Afghanistan: not true. Iraq had a connection to Al Qaeda: not true. Iraq refused to let in UN weapons inspectors: not true. Iraq had weapons of mass destruction: not true. The Jessica Lynch<\/a> and Pat Tillman<\/a> stories: not true.<\/p>\n

The body of bin Laden<\/b>, as we know, was quickly removed and disposed of<\/span> \u2014 allegedly<\/span> to conform with<\/span> Muslim tradition. Why couldn’t they have buried it at a military base instead?<\/p>\n

There’d be far fewer questions if we had captured<\/span> him alive. Think about it.<\/p>\n

What about Nuremberg?<\/h2>\n

The Nuremberg trials<\/span> gave the world truth and justice. If anyone questions how bad the Third Reich was, we can show them a film of Nazis admitting to their crimes. Take the opposite approach<\/span>, like the Soviets did with Hitler’s body, and closure<\/span> never comes.<\/p>\n

I’ve heard three official reasons<\/b> why we haven’t seen any bin Laden photos. The first is that the US is afraid of creating bin Laden cults<\/b>. Interesting. When the US killed Saddam Hussein’s sons, it showed the pictures to shocked Iraqis in order to prove that Uday and Qusay weren’t going to lead them. And gruesome<\/span> as the cell-phone video of Saddam Hussein’s execution<\/span> was, it proved the same thing.<\/p>\n

The second is that it might be possible to identify the US commandos<\/b>, thus putting them in danger. Please. All we need is a head shot.<\/p>\n

The third is that Osama was shot in the eye<\/b>. This makes more sense. But we see this sort of imagery in movies all the time; it wouldn’t be that shocking.<\/p>\n

So, as they say on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?<\/i>, \u201cIs that your final answer?<\/b>\u201d<\/p>\n

Seeing is believing<\/h2>\n

The White House is apparently<\/span> deciding whether to release<\/span> a photo. The decision rests with Barack Obama.<\/p>\n

The president should know what to do. He’s been the victim<\/a> of enough conspiracy theories himself. Only last week, he released his long-form birth certificate<\/a>, which left even the biggest conspiracy theorists \u2014 Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann and Donald Trump \u2014 speechless.<\/p>\n

All the shaky<\/span> amateur videos of the Arab uprisings<\/span> show that the world wants documented proof<\/b> of anything its governments do. So whenever you’re closing in on<\/span> any bin Ladens, Aladdins, or bin liners<\/span>, be sure to<\/span> get those cameras rolling<\/span>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
